Teaching in the twenty-first century is a complex, multifaceted endeavor that requires flexibility, adaptability, and continuous learning. Nowadays, a growing number of teachers are turning to digitally enhanced communities of practice to alleviate occupational isolationism, receive emotional support, and develop their professional skills. This qualitative case study highlights the experiences of three educators who are members of an online interdisciplinary critical friends group (CFG). The results indicated that the participants perceived critical friendships to be a powerful site of teacher directed professional development that enhanced their critical reflective competencies and pedagogical practices. At the other end of the learning continuum, the participants also identified significant obstacles such as a lack of trust, problematic group dynamics (e.g., free riding), and scheduling conflicts that can undermine the social cohesion within a CFG. |
