| 内容記述 | The Tomioka Silk Mill, built over 100 years ago, was the world’s first large scale reeling factory at that time. The Meiji Government made the factory for raw silk resources. A French technician, Paul Brunat, was hired for the construction of the Tomioka Silk Mill. It was operated under both new European technology and original Japanese methods of construction. The turning point for the Tomioka Silk Mill was a close of the operation in 1987. Some people recognized the significance of the factory’s existence, and then the Tomioka Silk Mill Association was organized in 1988. Many people came to feel that the Tomioka Silk Mill and other cultural assets relating to raw silk were important for the city of Tomioka. Finally in 2007 those were designated as a potential World Heritage Site. In this process, citizen activities played an important part. At same time we should consider how Katakura Industries made a large contribution toward being designated as a potential World Heritage Site. |
