A collaborative effort was made with elementary school speech therapists to summarize and examine what they learned and experienced through their observations of beginning arithmetic (addition) classes. Their views were then looked at in light of a pragmatic perspective as well as the Association of Mathematical Instruction' s approach to instilling the concept of mathematical operations (addition) by mediating between concrete and abstract sequences.
